Rumah Sayang
About This Spot
Stepping into Rumah Sayang at Jem feels like entering a familiar, bustling corner tucked away in one of Singapore’s busiest malls. It’s the kind of place where the day’s rhythm slows just a touch, inviting hungry visitors to settle in for a comforting meal without fuss. The hum of casual chatter, the clatter of plates, and the welcoming smile from the auntie behind the counter create an easygoing atmosphere — a subtle reminder that good food is a shared experience, not just a quick stop.
As a halal eatery that quietly commands attention for its Singaporean and Peranakan flavors, Rumah Sayang serves up more than just dishes — it offers a taste of home in every bite. The air here carries the gentle warmth of coconut milk and spices, a fragrant backdrop to dishes like fragrant nasi lemak, slow-cooked beef rendang, or hearty fish head curry. Each meal feels thoughtfully composed, with sides and sauces that invite you to explore familiar flavors in unhurried company.
The pace is friendly and relaxed, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch during a shopping trip or lingering over a plate of prawn egg laksa as you catch up with friends. The casual seating and approachable service add to the sense of comfort, encouraging conversations against the subtle spice and sweet tea ice that hint at home kitchens and long afternoons shared around the table.
Beyond the food, Rumah Sayang’s charm emerges in little human moments — the easy rapport between staff and diners, the careful preparation behind each order, and the simple joy of discovering dishes that hold stories of heritage and everyday life. This is a place best experienced slowly, one satisfying mouthful at a time, where enjoyment comes as much from the atmosphere as from the flavors themselves.

I've tried this store multiple times for lunch, sampling various dishes from chicken and mutton to beef rendang. Today, I ordered the beef rendang, while my colleague opted for the chicken rendang. The set came with two side dishes, including options like fried egg, vegetables, fried tofu, or Begedil. *Customer Service* The auntie who served us was friendly and communicative, making requests easy. With minimal fuss, I'd rate their customer service (4/5). *Beef Rendang* The beef rendang stood out with its unique, aromatic curry flavor – a true reflection of the chef's skill. The strong, thick curry sauce blended perfectly with the beef, earning a (4/5). *Sides and Extras* The cauliflower was cooked to perfection – crunchy and not overcooked (4/5). The fried egg was omelette-style with a sprinkle of onion leaves for added flavor (3.5/5). *The Chilli Game-Changer* Don't forget their special chilli adding-on if you can handle the heat! It really elevates the whole dish. *Value for Money* The total bill came up to $18.90 for 1 chicken rendang, 1 beef rendang, and 2 coffees. Definitely worth coming back for!

Just had a comforting feast at Rumah Sayang, Jem, and every bite felt like a warm hug! The nasi lemak is a perfect balance of fragrant coconut rice, crispy fried chicken, buttery omelette, crunchy peanuts, and spicy sambal—it’s hearty, flavorful, and utterly satisfying. The seafood fritters are golden, crispy, and deliciously simple, with just the right touch of chili to make them irresistible. And the mee siam with otah—wow! Tangy, slightly spicy, and perfectly balanced with tender noodles, fragrant sauce, and flavorful otah, it’s comforting, aromatic, and packed with flavor in every bite. Every dish at Rumah Sayang shows care and attention, delivering Malay comfort food that warms your heart as much as your stomach. Highly recommend for anyone craving soulful, flavorful meals!

Mee Siam (SGD $6.90) @ Rumah Sayang. . Opened in June 2013 by the Red Ginger Group, this casual eatery is known for their delicious Malay-Peranakan dishes, and typically attracts queues during meal times. . Their rendition has springy rice vermicelli noodles, crisp garlic chives, crisp bean sprouts, spongy tofu puffs, and bouncy hard boiled chicken egg, with grainy vegetal herbal eggy sweet savoury flavour. . The gravy is thin and mellow, with mild savoury sweet zesty sour tangy spice flavour, with a slight kick from added lime juice. . The unique addition is otah, the tender soft spiced fish paste having a smoky savoury salty spice flavour.

I saw many reviews about their services, but fortunately for me that I didn't experience any of that. We ordered the Nasi Padang and selected our dishes. Overall taste was good and I particularly like the samba chilli which is extremely spicy .

Finally tried this long standing nasi padang shop, and also got to know that it’s part of the Red Ginger brand which has various other outlets across the island too. opted for the fish curry set for 2, and added 2 vegetable dishes for a total of under $30 - which we thought was fairly priced given that it’s ultimately a nasi padang shop the curry fish head didn’t have a ton of meat, though there’s still enough to go about for the 3 of us - it did come with a lot of vegetables within the claypot though, and did taste a little spicy. The tahu goreng that comes with the set was well seasoned, easy to go down too. the potato was one of the nicest ones i have had, with that flour coating that other shops don’t usually have broccoli was pretty normal, a must have dish in our meals (a green of some sort) Definitely a spot we will return in future for our nasi padang fix now that we have tried it once!

Never disappointed with the food and beverages served. Fast and staff acknowledge and even have time to engaged with guest. Besides lunch hour, the rest of the timing is great to have some local delights. Today is the prata set and iced cold barley.

Was searching around for a breakfast place as I was early for an appointment. Chanced upon Rumah Sayang. Full padang dishes are ready when I arrive at about 8.20am. But I ordered the mee siam. First look at the gravy made me wonder if it will be nice. It looks more like laksa gravy with consistency almost like mee rebus. But looks can be deceiving. I has a delicious and balanced sweet and sour taste to it. I like!
